Simpocalypse - Week 1 - Day 4

Journal of Ariane Steel - Medic / Lab Tech -- "My First Patient"

(Click here to go back to the beginning / Prologue of this story)

"There's an emergency at the airfield!"

---

Today began with a sudden change of plans. On my way to the medical facility, I saw a commotion outside one of the bunkers and overheard an emergency crew member telling a middle aged woman with bright red hair that there had been a crash at the flight line and some civilian refugees had been hurt when the transport plane slid off the runway. She rushed off immediately and I headed towards work, wondering if we would be needed for medical assistance.

---

"Mayor Stone" & Military Escort

---

Outside the Science and Medical entrance, I was approached by the red-haired woman who introduced herself as "unofficially Mayor" Matricia Stone. She explained the situation and told me the hospital's beds were full and extra patients from the crash were being put up wherever there was space. I was to be in charge of one they'd placed in the lab's 'duty' bunk. He was apparently in good condition but suffering a concussion.

---

My first patient - sleeping and injured.

---

I hurried to the lab, changed into my medic scrubs and approached my 'patient' quietly, as he was sound asleep. His vitals were stable and I was charged with watching over him until he woke while resuming my research.

---

Young and handsome...

---

His chart said his name was "Drew Frost" and had come in on the last transport to join Chitmar's Military force as a new recruit. He was previously in good health with no signs of the devastating virus found. No age was given, but he seemed very young to me as he slept, his face slightly unshaven and his hair needing trimmed. He seemed cute in a scruffy teenager kind of way.

---

"hoping for the best..."
---

More than anything, I wanted this young man to get better. I knew this was the way a real doctor felt about their patients... yet I was so helpless to do much yet! I was determined to study hard and learn everything I could to become a better medic and eventually a doctor. It was time to buckle down with the medical journals and long hours it would take to earn my residency here at the hospital!

---

Worried but determined

---

I left the lab and headed out for paramedic duty, helping transport more of the injured from the plane crash. Fortunately none of the injured were in critical condition. The plane had skidded off the runway and flipped on its side during landing, so most of the injuries were broken bones and bumps and bruises.

Things were tough, but I knew I was a vital member of our station's survival team, and that has kept me motivated through these rough first few days... My determination would be as strong as my new last name!
